Repair or Replace? Here Is How We Decide

The first question most homeowners ask us is whether they need a full replacement or just a repair. The honest answer is: it depends on the type of damage and how deep it goes. Surface-level cracks and minor spalling can often be fixed without tearing anything out. But when a slab has shifted, sunk significantly, or broken apart from base failure underneath, repair alone will not hold.

We always start with an honest assessment. We look at the width and depth of the cracks, check for movement when weight is applied, and evaluate whether the base is still solid. If we can repair it and get you another 10 to 15 years, we will tell you that. If replacement is the smarter long-term call, we explain exactly why before we quote you anything.

Either way, the goal is to stop the problem from getting worse and restore a safe, even surface you can use without worrying about trip hazards, water pooling, or further deterioration. This same approach applies whether we are working on a concrete driveway, a patio slab, or an interior floor.

Types of Concrete Damage We Fix

Concrete damage comes in a lot of different forms. Some of it is purely cosmetic. Some of it is a safety risk. Some of it is a sign that something deeper is wrong. Here are the most common issues we deal with in Laredo:

  • Hairline and structural cracks from ground movement or improper curing
  • Spalling and surface flaking caused by moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, or poor finishing
  • Sunken or uneven slabs where the soil underneath has settled or washed away
  • Broken edges and corner chips on driveways, steps, and curbs
  • Trip hazards where one slab panel has risen higher than its neighbor
  • Water pooling caused by incorrect slope or surface settling
  • Tree root damage that has lifted or cracked sections from below
  • Full slab failure where the surface has deteriorated beyond repair

When the damage points to a drainage issue, we address the slope and grading as part of the repair so the same problem does not return. When root damage is involved, we work with you on the best plan for the area before pouring new concrete. Our concrete slab and foundation services cover more extensive structural situations if your repair needs run deeper.

How We Handle Concrete Repairs in Laredo

A concrete repair done the right way is not just about patching over the problem. If the base underneath the damaged section is compromised, a surface patch will fail within a season or two. We dig down, fix what is causing the issue, and then restore the surface properly.

For partial replacements, we saw-cut the damaged panel cleanly along the existing joints, remove the old concrete, compact the sub-base, pour fresh concrete with reinforcement, and finish it to match the surrounding surface as closely as possible. New concrete will look slightly lighter than aged concrete at first, but it evens out over several months of weathering.

For full replacements, we remove the entire slab, address any drainage or base issues, and start fresh. The end result is a surface that performs better and lasts longer than the original, because we are correcting whatever caused the failure in the first place. Every repair and replacement job we do in Laredo comes with a straightforward explanation of what was wrong and what we did to fix it.

Questions About Concrete Repair and Replacement

How do I know if my concrete needs to be repaired or fully replaced?+
If your concrete has surface cracks that are less than a quarter-inch wide, or minor spalling on the top layer, repair is usually the right call. If the slab has moved or sunk, if cracks run all the way through the slab, or if large sections are breaking apart, replacement is likely more cost-effective in the long run. We will assess it for you and give you an honest recommendation with no obligation to book.
Will a repaired section match the rest of my concrete?+
Fresh concrete is always lighter than aged concrete, so there will be a visible color difference when we first pour a replacement section. Over time, as the new concrete weathers and ages, the color difference becomes much less noticeable. If color consistency matters to you, we can discuss options like staining the entire surface after the repair is complete to create a more uniform look.
How long does concrete repair take?+
Most residential repair and partial replacement jobs are completed in one day. Larger full-slab replacements may take two days depending on the size of the area. After the concrete is poured, you should stay off it for 24 to 48 hours for foot traffic, and keep vehicles off for at least 7 days. We will give you a clear timeline before we start so you can plan around it.
