Why Your Foundation Is the Most Important Pour We Do

Every structure needs a solid base. Whether it is a new home, a garage, a storage building, a workshop, or a commercial space, the concrete slab underneath everything else determines how well that structure holds up over time. A weak or improperly poured foundation will crack, shift, and cause problems throughout the entire building.

In Laredo and across Webb County, the soil conditions make foundation work especially important. The clay-heavy soil here expands when it gets wet and contracts when it dries out. That constant movement puts stress on any slab that was not prepared for it. Proper reinforcement, adequate thickness, and correct base preparation are not optional extras. They are what separate a slab that lasts from one that starts failing within a few years.

At Laredo Concrete Company, we treat foundation pours with the care they deserve. We do not cut corners on prep work, reinforcement, or concrete quality. You are counting on this slab for the life of your structure, and we take that seriously.

What Is Included in Our Slab and Foundation Services

We handle concrete slabs and foundations for a range of projects across residential and commercial properties. Here is a breakdown of what we cover:

Types of slab and foundation work we do:

  • New home and addition foundations (monolithic and conventional slab)
  • Garage and carport slabs for new construction or replacements
  • Shed, workshop, and storage building pads
  • Barn and agricultural structure foundations
  • Commercial building slabs and warehouse floors
  • Equipment pads and mechanical unit bases
  • Utility and accessory structure foundations

What every slab project includes:

  • Site clearing and grading for proper slope and drainage
  • Compacted gravel base layer to stabilize the subgrade
  • Vapor barrier installation where moisture protection is needed
  • Rebar grid and/or post-tension cables based on load requirements
  • Form work with accurate dimensions and level edges
  • Concrete pour using the correct PSI mix for structural use
  • Professional finishing and surface texture
  • Curing and protection during the critical early set period

After the slab is in place, you may also want a finished surface in the same space. We offer epoxy garage floor coatings that go over a cured slab to give it a durable, easy-to-clean finish that stands up to oil and heavy use.

Local Soil Conditions and Why They Change Everything

One thing that sets foundation work in Laredo apart from other areas is the soil. This region has expansive clay soil that moves more than sandy or loamy soils found elsewhere. That movement creates what is called differential settlement, where one part of the slab shifts more than another. Left unchecked, this leads to uneven floors, sticking doors, and cracks in walls.

Handling this correctly means doing more upfront prep work. We remove unsuitable material if needed, bring in compactable fill, and use proper reinforcement designed for these soil conditions. We also grade the site so water drains away from the structure, because water is one of the biggest contributors to soil movement under a slab.

Our team has poured slabs across Laredo, Rio Bravo, Webb County, and surrounding communities. We know what works here because we have done it here. Slab and Foundation Questions We Hear Often

Have a question not covered here? Call us directly at (956) 955-8166.

How thick should a residential concrete slab be?+
For most residential slabs like garages, sheds, and home additions, 4 inches is the minimum standard thickness. For heavier loads such as workshop equipment, large vehicles, or commercial use, we typically recommend 6 inches with added rebar. The right thickness depends on what is being built on top and what the soil conditions are at your specific location.
How long does a concrete slab need to cure before building on it?+
Concrete gains about 70 percent of its strength within the first 7 days and reaches full design strength at 28 days. For most light construction like framing a wood structure, you can typically begin work after 7 days. For heavier structural loads, waiting the full 28 days is the safe standard. We will give you a specific recommendation based on your project when the work is complete.
Do I need a permit for a concrete slab in Laredo?+
It depends on the project. A small accessory slab like a shed pad may not require a permit, but a home addition foundation or garage slab typically will. We work with customers to understand what permits are needed before we start and can advise you on what to expect. Pulling the proper permits protects you as the property owner and ensures the work is done to code.
